Jutting from the surrounding tidal basin along the Normandy coast is this 300 ft granite outcrop with an assemblage of structures dating back to 708. Over the centuries it has served as a monastery and abbey, a fortress fending off the English in the Hundred Years’ War, a prison during the French Revolution and now a World Heritage Site and visited by millions.
